The Jewish War Veterans organization which opens its 67th national convention here tomorrow, today urged President Kennedy to demand that Argentina and Uruguay take strong steps to curb outbreaks of anti-Semitism in those countries.
In a telegram to the President signed by Abraham Kraditor of New York, chairman of JWV’s foreign affairs committee, the President was urged “to take immediate action demanding that the governments of Argentine and Uruguay protect the more than 500,000 Jews living within their borders against hard-core fascist extremists. Because of the many unreconstructed Nazis residing in Argentina, the possibility of a Nazi rebirth is not remote.”
“The Jewish communities of these countries are in grave danger, ” Mr. Kraditor pointed out, “largely because of the weaknesses displayed by the central governments in dealing with the perpetrators of these crimes, reminiscent of the early days of Hitlerian Germany.”
(“Deep grief” over the recent anti-Semitic outbreaks in Uruguay, has been expressed to Farband-Labor Zionist Order in a letter signed by Sr. B. Ochoteco, Charge d’Affaires in the Embassy of Uruguay in Washington. The letter also contains assurances that the authorities in Uruguay are handling “promptly and properly” the attempt by ‘”some anti-Jewish persons to perpetrate crimes against our Jewish community.” Mr. Ochoteco wrote in response to a communication sent to the Uruguayan Ambassador by Louis Segal, General Secretary of Farband, a national Jewish fraternal organization, expressing concern over the recent anti-Jewish outbursts.)
