A delegation of American and British Jewish war veterans protested today to Chancellor Josef Klaus that pending social security legislation in Austria discriminated against victims of Nazism in favor of Nazi-tainted former civil servants.
(The Canadian Jewish Congress, in a protest submitted to the Austrian Ambassador in Ottawa, said the pending Austrian legislation provided generous pensions to former civil servants who were barred from their jobs after World War II on suspicion of implication in Nazi war crimes. The Congress contrasted this treatment with the “comparatively small benefits” for Austrian victims of Nazism.)
The delegation also expressed concern over the growth of anti-Semitism in Austria. The Chancellor denied that anti-Semitism was increasing in the country and said it was the Government’s policy to combat anti-Semitism and warn Austrian youth against anti-Semitic ideas.
