A unanimous decision to proclaim a campaign to raise a Defense Fund of $25,000 “to defend the Jewish press and the Jewish labor movement against Communist attacks” was adopted at a general membership meeting of the J. L. Perets Writers Union, a professional organization of Yiddish journalists, and announced here today.
The announcement states that Jewish labor unions and Jewish communal organizations are expected to help in the campaign, which was prompted by the Newspaper Guild’s attempt to undermine the Jewish Writers Union by provoking a strike in the Day, New York Jewish daily newspaper. The strike, which is opposed by the Jewish Writers Union, is condemned in an appeal issued by the Union to the Jewish public today as “a sinister Communist maneuver in order to capture, first, control in the Day and then in the other Jewish newspapers.”
