The Jerusalem Municipal Council was unable to conduct business for lack of a quorum today when all six Jewish members boycotted the meeting pending a Government decision on their demand for replacing of the present Arab mayor by a Jew in view of the Jewish majority in the population.
A Jewish journalist was attacked and seriously injured early today by Englishmen in civilian dress, climaxing several such incidents in recent nights. The writer, Chaim Baltzan Jerusalem correspondent of the Tel Aviv Hebrew daily Haboker, was ganged by four Britons near the Nathan Straus Health Center and beaten with an iron bar.
Meanwhile, British forces searching the village of Silet Hartiya in Samaria seized one-and-a-quarter tons of gunpowder. The Arabic daily, Al Jihad, organ of the exiled ex-Mufti of Jerusalem, was suspended for two weeks.
The Tel Aviv Municipal Council heard Mayor Israel Rokach protest against recent numerous arrests of Jews and adopted a resolution demanding that the Government lift the curfew on Jewish suburbs and roads. According to the Jewish press, the Jewish public will not attend the High Commissioner’s annual King’s birthday garden party on June 8.
