The final results of the Municipal elections at Haifa, made public today, show a decisive victory for the Hassan bey Shukri group which opposed the list of the Arab Executive. This group, consisting of Moslems and Christians, was supported by the Jewish community of Haifa and obtained six seats on the Municipal Council while its antagonists. led by Abdel Rahman, the former Mayor, got only two, the Mayor himself not being returned.
Following the example of Jerusalem and other cities, only one Jewish list was submitted here. No polls were necessary for the Jewish candidates and both Mr. David Cohen of the Workers’ Council and Shabtai Levi were returned unopposed.
The Christians and Moslems were divided into four competing groups with 10 Christian candidates, for four Municipal seats, and nine Moslem candidates, for four seats.
After the election results were announced Hassan bey Shukri who is one of the strongest candidates for the Mayorality, visited the Haifa Workers’ Council. He thanked them for their support in the Municipal elections and promised to assist the workers in their demands. He further declared that the elections brought about a rapprochement between the Arabs and the Jews.
