A demand that the next mayor of Jerusalem be a Jew was made today by a delegation of the Agudas Israel, which conferred with Palestine Government authorities. The mayor is appointed by the Government.
The controversy around whether a Jew or an Arab should succeed Mustapha Bey Khalidi, who died several months ago, was resumed this week when the Arab press renewed its demands for the appointment of an Arab, occasioning demands from the Hebrew press for the appointment of a Jew. Two-thirds of Jerusalem’s 160,000 residents are Jewish.
