Riot police in Oran went into action twice yesterday to stop fighting between Jews and Moslems on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, it was reported here today from Algiers. The trouble began when a Moslem knifed and seriously injured a Jew.
A group of Jewish youths responded to the knifing by going into action against some Moslems. The Jewish youth also sacked three Moslem-owned stores and set fire to a fourth store in which the stabber had taken refuge. Moslems then attacked the Jewish youth with knives and shots were fired before the riot police moved in and arrested the stabber. The Jewish-Moslem rioting lasted four hours.
