The Central Council of Jews in Germany has protested to the West German Government against the unnecessary violation of Jewish graves at concentration camp cemeteries and expected dissolution of such cemeteries which Bonn has pledged to maintain.
The situation developed when the remains of French deportees murdered in Germany were exhumed for shipment to France, as per a 1954 pact between the two states. When mass graves were opened, the remains of Frenchmen were sent to France and the others shipped to a common cemetery at the site of the former concentration camp at Flossenburg,
The council charged that many graves of Nazi victims were opened unnecessarily and religious regulations violated. The Jewish organizations were not consulted in advance of these actions, the council said.
