Jewish leaders and organizations throughout Great Britain today sent messages of condolence to King George and the Royal family on the tragic death of the King’s youngest brother, the Duke of Kent, who was killed in the crash of a Sunderland bomber in Scotland yesterday. The Jewish Agency for Palestine sent a message to Viscount Cranborne, the Colonial Secretary, requesting him to express its sympathies to the King, and also sent condolences to Queen Mary, the Duke’s mother, and to the Duchess of Kent.
Chief Rabbi Herts, in a message to the King on behalf of Jewish communities throughout the Empire, conveyed “deepest sympathy in your great sorrow on the death of His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent during performance of duty for the nation.” The Chief Rabbi likewise sent messages to Queen Mary and the Duchess. Condolences were also sent by the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Anglo-Jewish Association.
