Of the three Baronetcies conferred in the New Year’s Honours List published this morning in the Supplement to the “London Gazette”, two go to Jews, both members of Parliament, Mr. Percy Alfred Harris, Liberal member for South-west Bethnal Green since 1922 and previously for the Harborough Division of Leicester shire, a former Deputy Chairman of the London County Council, and Mr. Arthur Michael Samuel, Conservative member for Farnham since 1918, who was Parliamentary Secretary to the Department of Overseas Trade in 1924-27 and Financial Secretary to the Treasury in 1927-1929.
Mr. Benjamin Drage, of the Drage Furnishing Company., whose name is a household word, is given a knighthood.
Major Hudson, the Palestine Postmaster General, becomes a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Professor Patrick Geddes, the famous town-planning pioneer, who designed the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, receives a knighthood.
Mr. A. M. Samuel’s Barometcy – one of three only is a deserved consolation award, the “Daily Telegraph” says in an editorial, for loss of the place which his proved talents and industry would certainly have gained him in a purely Conservative Government.
