The 26,000 Jews of India are considering the establishment of a central representative body, the World Jewish Congress reported today.

Dr. Aaron Steinberg, director of the WJC cultural department, said he was informed of the plan by two Indian Jewish leaders, H. Cynowicz of Bombay, and E. E. Jhirad of New Delhi, at the recent ninth annual conference of UNESCO in New Delhi.

Most Indian Jews live in two cities, 18,000 in Bombay and 2,000 in Calcutta, Dr. Steinberg said. In the far south, there is still a small community of Cochin Jews, most of whom migrated to Israel soon after establishment of the Jewish State.
