The Jewish community of Izmir, which numbers 5,000 following the emigration of 9,000 Israel-bound members of the community, is in the process of reorganization, according to reports received here.
The Chief Rabbinate of Izmir held its first meeting to elect a new Religious and Lay Council. The incumbent president of the lay council, Y. Saltiel, is expected to submit his resignation after he returns from Israel where he handed over to religious authorities in the Jewish state a gift of Scrolls of the Law and ancient Hebrew books, as well as Jewish volumes printed in Ladino.
