Governor Richard J. Hughes of New Jersey announced here this weekend that steps have been taken to permit Orthodox Jews who wish to cover their heads to do so while appearing in any court in this State.
The Governor’s announcement was in response to protests against an occurrence in a municipal court at Secaucus, N. J., recently, where the judge ordered a Jew to remove his skull-cap. Such incidents, stated Gov. Hughes, “are, no doubt, due to a lack of knowledge of the court official involved of the religious significance of the covering of heads.”
Governor Hughes asserted he was calling the matter to the attention of New Jersey’s Chief Justice Weintraub “so that steps may be taken to avoid this sometimes innocent but nevertheless embarrassing interference in this religious principle.”
