The political tension in the country is not preventing the Jewish community from continuing its every-day pursuits, as evidenced by the following events which have occurred during the last few days.
At a meeting of the Tel Aviv municipality, Mayor Israel Rokach reported that the Palestine Government has approved the city’s budget for the current fiscal year, which totals $6,000,000.
The opening this week of its own theatre by the famed Habimah theatrical troupe was an occasion of festivity. The theatre, which has been under construction for several years, was flood-lit, and an orchestra played the Hebrew and British national anthems. The official presentation of the building was made by Mayor Rokach, while leaders of the Jewish Agency participated in the ceremony. It was Tel Aviv’s biggest artistic event in a decade.
The Jewish National Fund announced that Dr. Harry Friedenwald, famed Baltimore opthalmologist, and author of “Jews and Medicine,” has donated 122 dunams of orange groves to the JNF on the occasion of his 80th birthday. At the same time, the Hadassah announced that it was planting a grove of 10,000 trees to honor Dr. Friedenwald.
