The formation of a Central Jewish Relief Committee in Poland, which will distribute funds to be received from the Joint Distribution Committee, was announced in Warsaw. S. Fishgrund was elected president at the constituent meeting of the new body.
In announcing the functions of the committee, Mr. Fishgrund said that it would concentrate primarily on reconstructive aid for Jews repatriated from the Soviet Union and would help them in settling in their homes and in securing work. Children attending the Jewish schools will be fed in the schools and adults desiring to learn a trade will be given the opportunity to do so. Aid will also be given to aged and sick.
The committee will also assist Jews who wish to establish artisan shops for themselves and will attempt to expand the existing Jewish cooperative shops. The activities of the Central Jewish Relief Committee and its branches will be publicized in order to keep these activities “under a constant public control,” the announcement said.
