The Council of Jewish Educational Institutions of Greater Montreal demanded today that the Government of Quebec extend to Jewish elementary schools the same grants which the provincial Ministry of Education has proposed to give to privately-operated schools on the secondary or post-secondary level.
The Ministry’s move, proposed in a bill now pending in the House of Commons, would make available grants of $350 a year for students in the private high schools, and $450 for students taking post-secondary courses in private schools. However, no provision was made for elementary school students under non-governmental auspices. In this city, there are five Jewish day high schools.
In a telegram to Quebec Minister of Education Jean Jacques Bertrand, the Jewish body, which is sponsored by the Canadian Jewish Congress, stressed: “Close to 4,500 children attend Jewish day schools in Montreal, imposing an unbearably heavy burden on the parents and the community. These schools carry a full program and would undoubtedly qualify for full Government approval.”
