Furloughs for the Passover holiday will be granted to all Jewish service men in the United States Army and Navy, according to an announcement by Dr. Cyrus Adler, chairman of the Army and Navy committee of the Jewish Welfare Board.
An order of the War Department grants leave to Jewish soldiers “for such time as is necessary to permit them to be at their homes, when practicable, or at places where Seder celebrations are held, from noon of Friday, March 30, until midnight of Sunday, April 1.” The Navy Department has issued a similarly worded order.
The Jewish Welfare Board will distribute unleavened bread and Haggadahs (Passover prayer books). The board has arranged for religious services for those men who reside at a great distance from their homes and are unable to leave their posts. Passover will be observed by Jewish soldiers and sailors in China, Manila, Hawaii, Panama and Haiti.
