History will be made by South African Jewry next month when the first united campaign for local Jewish needs will be launched with a goal of $2,000,000. The campaign, named the “United Communal Fund for South African Jewry,” will implement the decision of the recent Congress of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.
A special conference between the executive of the Board and provincial committees, held at Johannesburg, arranged final details. A statement was issued today declaring that the conference agreed that the main participants in the fund-raising drive would be the Jewish Board of Deputies, the South African Board of Jewish Education and the Union of Jewish Women.
The funds will be governed by a national council under the jurisdiction of the Board of Deputies. The conference allocated provincial quotas and the various provincial committees will fix the district quotas. The conference decided that a portion of the proceeds is to be specially earmarked for religious, educational and other needs of the rural communities which those regions cannot afford to pay themselves.
