A manifesto urging Turkish Jews to use the Turkish language was read in all synagogues in Turkey on the occasion of Rosh Hashonah. The Manifesto, issued by the Association of Turkish Culture, founded by young educated Jews to spread Turkish customs and language among the Jews of this country, declared:
“Proud of being sons of noble Turkey, which gave us shelter for 500 years and continues its hospitality uninfluenced by the excesses against our co-religionists in other countries, we urge you to use Turkish as your native tongue because we form an integral part of this noble nation and there should be nothing to distinguish us from our brothers.”
