A sharp protest against the acceptance by the Australian Government of a West German ambassador was issued here today by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry. The protest followed an announcement by the Ministry of External Affairs that Dr. W. Heiss had been appointed West German envoy to Australia.
In a statement today. Ben Green, president of the Jewish representative body, said: “It is surprising to find that the Australian Government is to receive an ambassador from Germany while a peace treaty with that country has not yet been signed. It is difficult to understand what appears to be indecent haste.
“An appointment in these circumstances is unusual when the final details of the peace treaty are not known and when it is not yet known whether Germany has made satisfactory arrangements to pay reparations for damage done to the democratic nations during the war.”
