The Jewish population of Munich read today with great relief an official statement issued by the Bavarian Minister of Interior Wagner, promising prosecution of all those involved in the anti-Jewish riots last Saturday.
The Minister’s statement came as a surprise to many residents of this city, since the local press carefully avoided reporting Saturday’s anti-Jewish outbreak. It encouraged the Jewish shopkeepers to reopen their stores today after having been forced by Nazi pickets to close them down on Saturday.
The statement issued by Minister Wagner blames expelled members of the Nazi Party for the anti-Jewish terror which has been going on in Munich for the last two weeks.
TO BE TRIED
Herr Wagner announced that the ringleaders in Saturday’s events have been arrested and will be put on trial. Their names are given in his statement as Schmidt and Kopf, expelled from the Nazi ranks for embezzlement.
Failing to explain why the Nazi pickets started their operations from the City Hall, Herr Wagner, who is a staunch supporter of Julius Streicher, says in his official communique:
“A group of irresponsible elements, acting under the leadership of a person named Schmidt, formerly a member of the Steel Helmets, and another named Kopf, who was expelled last year from the Nazi Party for embezzlement,
