Jews abroad, once frightened by right-wing regimes, are now reacting the same way to left-wing takeovers. According to the Jewish Agency’s immigration department, 80 Jewish families in Chile have applied for immigration to Israel because they fear that the new leftist government there might turn anti-Semitic under Soviet influence. Their fear was sparked by the election of Socialist Party candidate Salvador Allende to the presidency with the support of the Communist Party, Catholics and various leftist splinter groups. The election demonstrated a leftward trend in the country. Gen, Uzi Narkiss, head of the immigration department, said on a radio broadcast that increased immigration can be expected from Chile and other Latin American countries. The outgoing President regarded as an arch-conservative, apparently inspired no fear among Chilean Jews.
