More than 100 Jewish delegations participated in the funeral services for Marshal Josef Pilsudski here, including a great number of rabbis and leaders of Jewish communities throughout the country.
The Jewish delegations carried wreaths with inscriptions in Polish and Hebrew forming the greatest group among the National Minorities in the funeral procession.
All along the hundreds of miles between Warsaw and Cracow Jewish delegations of the different townships along the route paid tribute together with the local non-Jewish population when the train with the body of Pilsudski passed. All Jewish stores were closed and the windows of every Jewish home was decorated with black and with pictures of Pilsudski.
Special Sabbath services were held yesterday in all synagogues of the country. The Sabbath sermons were dedicated to the Marshal. Special solemn services were held in the ancient historic synagogue of Cracow.
Pilsudski’s body was placed in the royal catacomb of the Wawel Castle near Poland’s great leaders, including the emancipator of the Jews, Casimir the Great.
