The Jewish Telegraphic Agency has received cabled messages and reports of mourning over the death of Eliezer Kaplan from Jewish organizations in various parts of the world. From Johannesburg a message stated that the 23rd biennial convention of the Zionist Federation of South Africa, which was in session when the news of Mr. Kaplan’s sudden death arrived, expressed its “deep shock” and sent its condolences to Mr. Kaplan’s family.
In Rome, Dante Lattes, vice-president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, issued a statement that “Mr. Kaplan’s death is a great loss for Italian and world Jewry.” Rome Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff said special prayers for the late Israeli statesman as the plane bearing his coffin departed from Italy. The Italian press published tributes to Mr. Kaplan.
The Board of Deputies of British Jews in London sent a message to Israeli Minister Eliahu Elath expressing its sympathy over the “untimely death of Eliezer Kaplan whose efforts in behalf of Israel have earned him the admiration of world Jewry. In a cable addressed to Premier David Ben Gurion, the British Section of the World Jewish Congress said that Mr. Kaplan’s “great efforts for the realization of the Zionist cause will be remembered, especially in Britain where he stood up most courageously in the most critical moments in Zionist history.”
