The eight-day Festival of Tabernacles, or Succoth, will be ushered in at sundown tonight in Jewish communities throughout the United States. The New York Board of Rabbis announcedthat ethrogrim (citrons) and lulavim (palm branches) have been provided to Jews in 110 institutions in the metropolitan area served by chaplains affiliated with the Board.
Several hundred newly-arrived Jewish DP immigrants living at the HIAS shelter here until they find permanent accommodations will celebrate the Succoth holiday in the traditional Succah (ceremonial hut) on the HIAS headquarters premises. The Synagogue Council of America, representing Orthodox, Reform and Conservative Judaism in America, issued a statement explaining the symbolism and historic significance of the festival.
