A decision to commence a mass hunger strike on May 18 in protest against the trial and imprisonment of Jewish and Zionist leaders in Rumania was announced here today by an organization of former Rumanian Jews.
In a move to attract world public attention to the fate of several hundred Jewish leaders in Rumania, leading figures in pre-Hitler Rumania will undertake an unlimited hunger strike. Already some 40 personalities have indicated that they will participate, including Idov Cohen, a deputy in the Israel Parliament, Dr. I. Kohavi, a former chairman of the Zionist Federation of Rumania, Dr. M. Singer, also a former Zionist chairman, and Dr. A. Landau, onetime member of the Rumanian Parliament.
The Jewish Agency today called upon Jews throughout the world and upon enlightened public opinion to protest the Rumanian Government’s attempt to crush Jews who “have shown that they want to remain Jews.”
