The Jewish people will survive this war because they are a “nation with an ideal,” declared Richard A. Butler, President of the Board of Education and former Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, addressing the opening session of the World Congress of Faiths today. The meeting is being attended by 2,000 persons of all religions.
Mr. Butler declared that the government intends to guarantee to every child the opportunity to be reared in the faith of his parents. Chief Rabbi Hertz paid tribute to organized religion as the only force that has spoken clearly and loudly against the extermination of the Jewish people. Other speakers represented the Anglican Church, the Hindu faith and the Confucians. Viscount Samuel is the presiding officer of the congress.
In Glasgow today the Jewish Representative Council to Combat Anti-Semitism adopted a resolution declaring that legislation is the only effective method of dealing with the problem. It announced that it intends to secure the active support of the Church, the labor movement and other groups for official action to outlaw anti-Jewish agitaion.
