The Jewish National Fund has arranged a Palestine land redemption banquet for Sunday, January 27, at the Hotel Astor. The affair is under the sponsorship of a group of outstanding New York Jews.
A fund to redeem land in Palestine for new immigrants will be the main object of the banquet.
According to announcement by Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American Fund group, Maurice Levin, president of Hearns, has been appointed chairman of the sponsoring committee. Associated with him are Dr. Ferdinand Sonneborn, Clarence Y. Palitz, Louis P. Rocker and Abraham Wechsler. The committee, which includes Zionists and non-Zionists, numbers more than 300.
Mr. Levin, whose acceptance of the chairmanship of the event marks his first connection with a Palestine project, declared that “political oppression and economic pressure make it necessary for thousands of Jews to seek refuge outside of their native or adopted countries,” as one of the reasons for his joining a Zionist movement.
