Eleven Jewish candidates, all members of the United Party established by the late Field Marshal Jan C. Smuts, were elected to the 42-man Johannesburg City Council in the municipal elections just concluded here. One of the 11, Hymie Miller, was named Deputy Mayor for the coming year.
In the town of Nigel, in the Transvaal, David Gamsu, 34, a member of the Town Council for only 11 months, was elected Mayor, a post his late father, Nathan Gamsu, had held for three terms during his 28-year tenure in the Town Council. Election returns from other parts of the Union indicate the election of Jews to the mayorship and to local councils in a number of communities.
