“The main stronghold against infiltration into the East is going to be little Israel, and it is time the world came to realize this,” Claud Beckett, mayor of Johannesburg, said here today in an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, following a brief visit to Israel.
“The western world,” he said, “has no tried or trusted friends in the East except Israel.” Beckett had high praise for the integration into Israel’s social and economic life of large numbers of immigrants, but was critical of the “luxury meals” enjoyed by tourists, declaring that it is “grossly wrong for visitors to enjoy privileges that are denied to the hard-working Israelis.”
