The Johannesburg City Council will meet Friday to elect the seventh Jewish mayor in Johannesburg history and a Jewish councillor as deputy mayor.
Deputy Mayor Ian Maltz is scheduled for nomination and election as mayor and Alec Gorshel is slated for nomination and election as deputy mayor. No other nominations are expected but should there be any, the two Jewish officials, proposed by the majority party, are assured of election.
Mr. Maltz, an attorney, was manager of the South African Maccabi Games team in 1935 and leader of the South African delegation to the games in 1950 and 1958. Mr. Gorshel is active in the city’s cultural life.
