JOHNSTON LEAVES U. S. ON MISSION TO ARAB LANDS AND ISRAEL
Ambassador Eric Johnston, President Eisen-hower’s personal envoy, today left the United States by plane for the Arab countries and Israel on his mission to bring about Arab-Israel agreement on the development of Jordan River water resources. He will make his first stop in Cairo.
Mr. Johnston was accompanied by a staff of experts and officials, including Arthur Z. Gardiner, chief political and economic adviser of the State Department Near Eastern Division; Oliver Troxel, State Department International Economics Officer, and James Ludlow, officer of the Department’s Office of United Nations Political and Security Affairs.
Representatives of the Foreign Operations Administration who accompanied Mr. Johnston include George Barnes, a staff member of the International Development Advisory Board of F. O. A.; Malcolm Jones, engineer, and Joan Sprague, secretary. Included in the group was also Robert T. Colburn, an engineer representing the firm of Charles T. Main, of Boston. This firm drafted the original Jordan River plan that Mr. Johnston presented.
