The sum of $50,400 was appropriated by the Joint distribution Committee here this week-end to aid the distressed Jews in the British protectorate of Aden, scene of recent violent Arab pogroms.
The action of the J.D.C. followed an on-the-spot investigation by Harry Viteles, ## member of the agency’s Middle East Advisory Committee, of current conditions among local Aden Jews and Yemenite Jewish refugees in the protectorate, located at the Southern tip of the Arabian peninsula.
At the same time, Moses A. Leavitt, J.D.C. executive vice-chairman, reported that Dr. Judah Magnes, chairman of the Middle last Advisory Committee has filed application with the Palestine Government for special non-quota visas for 950 Jewish orphans in Aden, sixty of whom were orphaned in the recent riots.
Viteles spent two weeks investigating conditions in Aden. His report indicated at. Arab attacks, which “began in conjunction with the general Arab strike in Palestine protesting the U.N. partition decision, resulted in the destruction of many Jewish homes, buildings and other properties. He disclosed that of the 170 Jewish shops in Aden, 114 were partially or totally destroyed. Four synagogues and two schools were also looted and ruined, he added.
