Dr. Bernhard Kahn, vice-chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, was today honored by the agency’s leadership on the occasion of his 75th birthday. A scroll citing Dr. Kahn’s “more than 48 years of great humanitarian service to Jews throughout the world” was presented to him by Edward M.M. Warburg on behalf of the J.D.C.
The J.D.C. leaders pointed out that “to an extent equalled by few men in our time” Dr. Kahn has earned the gratitude of Jews throughout the world. “We are keenly aware,” the citation said, “that in the period between two devastating wars, the accomplishments of J.D.C.–relieving suffering and rebuilding lives for vast numbers of Jews abroad–were owing largely to your singleness of purpose and far-sighted vision. Those associated with you in this effort will never forget with what high courage and devotion you met the impact of the Nazi terror, when the very lives of teas of thousands depended upon your resourcefulness to bring them aid and speed them to safety.”
