The Joint Distribution Committee in Rumania has swung into action on the greatest Passover campaign over conducted in this country. The crop failure has cut Rumanian wheat supplies to such an extent that the J.D.C. must supply matzohs to every one of the estimated 430,000 Jews in the country, without any assistance from the government.
The J.D.C. now has on hand sufficient stocks to furnish each Jew with approximately four pounds of matzochs for the eight-day holiday. In the process of being distributed at this time are 330 tons of matzohs, 110 tons of matzoh flour and 730 tons of unmilled wheat, all received from the United States.
The matzohs are being delivered to the Jewish communities with instructions that they be distributed free of charge to the poor, to former DP’s and repatriated Jews. Passover supplies will only be sold to these able to pay for them and the funds thus derived will be devoted to local communal needs.
