Jordan today accepted an Israel proposal for resumption of meetings between Israeli and Jordanian local commanders to ease the tension along the common frontier. The first meeting of local commanders has been called for June 8. Jordanian acceptance was announced today at a meeting of the Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission.
The commission, ruling on an Israeli complaint of Jordan aggression in the Latrun area, found that Jordan had violated the armistice agreement by permitting Jordanians to cultivate land in Israel territory, by permitting harvesting inside Israel and when Jordan forces laid down a cover fire to enable the Jordanians to complete the harvest. The commission called on the Arab state to take immediate steps to discontinue cultivation and harvesting in that area.
In the midst of the meeting the commission received a report that locusts had settled in no man’s land at Latrun and it was agreed that Israel and Jordan’s representatives would proceed to the spot, under United Nations supervision, to fight the insect pests.
In Tel Aviv it was announced that more than 10,000 denims (2,500 acres) of land in the Negev has been invaded by locust swarms from Jordan. Police, military and civilian units are working day and night to fight the invaders.
A small boat carrying a party of Arab refugees from the Egyptian-held Gaza strip to Lebanon landed on the shores of Israel today when it ran out of food and water supplies. The refugees were given food and water and permitted to proceed to Lebanon. The party included a number of women and children.
