A representative of the International Aviation Organization arrived in Elath Sunday to inspect the problem of air safety, created by the opening of a Jordanian airport in nearby Akaba. The Israelis claim that the Jordanians are refusing to cooperate with the Elath Airport control tower regarding takeoffs and landings of planes. Repeated requests by the Elath authorities have been turned down, Elath officials said.
The International aviation official spent the day in Elath and even took a light plane flight over the approaches to the Elath runway to evaluate the dangers presented by the Akaba Airport. The official is expected to go to Akaba following his investigation in Elath in order to arrange for the safety of planes at both airports. The Akaba Airport services two dally flights to Amman, besides small aircraft and army planes. The name of the expert was withheld.
