Jordan’s highest court, the Court of Cassation, has ordered Barclay’s Bank to pay 6,000 pounds sterling to a Palestine Arab refugee whose funds were frozen in a branch of the bank in Israel under Israeli law, it was reported here today from Amman.
The effect of this decision is to make Barclay’s Bank and the Ottoman Bank–both British institutions–responsible for Arab funds frozen in their branches in Israel.
In a similar action brought recently by an Arab bank in British courts, the British banks were upheld in their refusal to pay the frozen accounts. The British courts held that inasmuch as Britain recognized Israel it accepted the validity of Israel’s freeze order and the British banks had to obey the order.
