The “necessity and desirability of continuing the Joint Distribution Committee’s life-giving work” now that the United States is in the war, was pointed out by Joseph E. Davies, Chairman of President Roosevelt’s Committee on War Relief Agencies, and former United States Ambassador to Russia, in a letter made public today by Edward M. M. Warburg, Chairman of the J.D.C.
Quoting President Roosevelt’s statement to the J.D.C. earlier this year that “Your cause is the cause of all Americans, for democracy must begin with man’s humanity to man,” Mr. Davies declared that “it seems desirable and indispensable to meet urgent war relief requirements overseas conducted by agencies whose policies and programs conform to the regulations and objectives of the United States Government.” Mr. Davies further pointed out that all the J.D.C.’s activities “are aimed at assisting many of those persons who have been the chief victims of Hitlerism and the chief proponents of democracy in Europe.”
