Joseph E. Kessel well-known French author and son of immigrant Jewish parents, was awarded today the coveted Prince Rainier literary prize for 1959. The prize, carrying an award of 1,000,000 francs, is given each year to a French-language writer for the outstanding quality of his total work.
The jury that voted the prize to Mr. Kessel consisted of a group of French literary notables, including Georges Duhamel, Andre Maurois and Marcel Pagnol. M. Kessel is 61. He came to France in 1914 and has lived here since, except for the World War II years, attaining prominence as journalist and author.
