Joseph Meyuchas, leading Hebrew pedagogue and author, a member of a prominent Sephardic family which has provided rabbis for the Jerusalem community for more than 250 years, died here today, at the age of 74.
Born in Palestine, Meyuchas studied at various Yeshivas there and for twenty-eight years taught Hebrew, French and Arabic in the Anglo-Jewish Society School in Jerusalem. For 25 years he was director of Ezra Seminary. From 1920 to 1931 he was president of the Jewish Community Council in Jerusalem. He was a member of the Jewish National Council of Palestine from the time of its establishment. An active participant in cultural and communal work in Palestine, he was the founder of several libraries and of the Sephardic Union. He was also instrumental in the establishment of B’nai B’rith lodges in Greece and Bulgaria.
