Joseph Prag, English Jewish leader, died here yesterday at the age of 70.
Mr. Prag, who was one of the early pioneers in the Zionist movement, played a leading role in the recent English-Jewish conference on the extension of the Jewish Agency and was appointed a member of the Committee on Palestine of the Board of Jewish Deputies.
Born in Liverpool in 1859, Joseph Prag was educated at the Liverpool Institute and at Queen’s College. Although he did not follow the Herzl movement, he retained his interest in the Chovevei Zion, the English section of which he founded. He was a member of the Council of the Anglo-Jewish Association and was active in the work of protecting Jewish rights. He was a frequent contributor to various journals on the question of Palestine colonization.
He held many communal offices, was president of the Kilburn Talmud Torah, chairman of the Associate Synagogue Committee of the United Synagogue; treasurer of the Board of Deputies, a member of the Joint Foreign Committee, president of the Talmud Torah Trust and a member of the executive committees of the Jewish War Memorial and the Council for Education. He was a member of the committee of the Board of Guardians.
