An “overseas chest” whose aim it will be “to restore to the synagogue its influence and leadership in the work of upbuilding Palestine” has been organized by the Society for the Advancement of Judaism, it was announced yesterday by Prof. Mordecai M. Kaplan, leader of the society.
The chest will attempt to raise a fund of $10,000 this year among the society’s members, to be distributed among various funds and agencies. Of this sum, $2,500 will be allotted to the Jewish National Fund for Palestine land redemption work.
Organization of the chest was effected at a meeting addressed by Prof. Kaplan, Morris Rothenberg, and Rabbi Ira Eisenstein. The following committee has been appointed to raise the 1935 quota: Abraham Leibowitz, chairman; David W. Unterberg, secretary, and Abraham T. Thompson, Jacob Klein and A. J. Bromberg.
