Libel suits against the editor and the publishers of the American Jewish magazine “The Vanguard.” Zionist laborite, published in New York, were filed by the officers and directors of the Judaea Industrial Corporation of New York, the parent body of the Judea Insurance Co., Ltd., of Jerusalem, and the Judea Life Insurance Company of New York, claiming a total amount of $400,000 for damages said to have been caused the corporation by the publication of matter contained in the May 1929 issue of “The Vanguard.”
The suits were filed, according to a report in the June issue of “The Vanguard.” by Judge Jacob S. Strahl. Max Fanwick, Jacob Ish-Kishor and Samuel Mason, respectively president, vice-president, secretary and managing director of the Judea Industrial Corporation. The suits were filed individually, each of the four asking $100,000 for damages suffered. Proceedings were also directed against the printers of the magazine. Up-to-Date Printing Company, Isaac Zaar, member of the staff of the “Jewish Morning Journal.” is editor of the monthly.
In its May issue “The Vangurd” published what purported to be a report of a suit instituted by Alex Freilich, a shareholder and representing other shareholders, against the officers and directors of the company. “The Vanguard” in reporting the inauguration of the proceedings against it, declares that it “did not lok for such a fight.” but since it has been started, “we are frank to say that we welcome it.”
“Jewish public opinion must be thoroughly satisfied that the noble national ideal is exploited for the good of Eretz Israel only.” is at issue according to “The Vanguard.”
New gifts to hospitals announced by the Julius Rosenwald Foundation brought the total to $1,205,000. A gift of $80,000 goes to Southern hospitals and $30,000 to assist in a survey of Negro health under the auspices of Tennessee Fisk University and the U. S. Public Health Service.
