The Columbia Law School Alumni Association announced today that Judge Joseph M. Proskauer will be the first recipient of a newly created Medal for Excellence.
Judge Proskauer, a graduate of Columbia College in 1896 and the Law School in 1899, served as a justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York from 1923 to 1930. He is one of the outstanding Jewish leaders in the country. The new award honors alumni and faculty members whose careers have demonstrated “the qualities of character, intellect, and social and professional responsibility that the School of Law nurtures.”
A native of Mobile, Alabama, Judge Proskauer has practiced law in New York since his graduation from the Columbia Law School in 1899 with the exception of those years he served on the bench. He is 86. He has held the offices of president and honorary president of the American Jewish Committee, president of the YMHA of New York, and trustee and president of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.
