Julius Rosenwald Dead

Mr. Julius Rosenwald, the Jewish multi-millionaire philanthropist, who was yesterday given up by his physician as unlikely to live another 36 hours, died at his home in Chicago this afternoon at 2.55 p.m.

An account of Mr. Rosenwald’s life and activities appeared in the J.T.A. Bulletin of the 1st. inst., when a J.T.A. cable from New York announced that Mr. Rosenwald’s condition was considered hopeless and that his sons and daughters had been called to his bedside.

Mr. Rosenwald’s five children, Mr. Lessing J. Rosenwald, Mr. William Rosenwald, Mrs. Adele R. Levy, Mrs. Edith R. Stern, and Mrs. Marian R. Stern, intending to continue the beneficent traditions of their father, formally filed notice a few days ago (as reported in the J.T.A. Bulletin of the 5th. inst.) of the incorporation of the “Rosenwald Family Association” for philanthropic, educational, scientific and charitable purposes.

Mr. Julius Rosenwald, both in the vast extent of his monetary benefactions to Jewish as well as general humanitarian causes and in the personal part which he played in the work of Jewish organisations, like the American Jewish Committee, the Joint Distribution Committee, and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, takes his place among the group of great American Jews, men such as Jacob H. Schiff, Judge Sulzberger, Louis Marshall, Oscar Straus, and Nathan Straus.

Although he gave great sums to Jewish institutions and activities and out of a sense of their downtrodden condition, to the elevation and education of the Negro race; Mr. Rosenwald devoted himself also in large measure to humanitarian work of a general character, and as during the Great War he gave immense sums for relief, chiefly in Eastern Europe, but without any discrimination as to race. He gave particular assistance in this regard to Mr. (now President) Hoover’s Children’s Relief Fund.

Mentiened soon after Mr. Hoover’s election as President, as a likely Minister of Commerce (the position held by the late Oscar Straus in the U.S. Government), Mr. Rosenwald was a fervent admirer of Mr. Hoover, and was an active worker on his behalf during the Presidential election.

Mr. Hoover, too, had a high opinion of Mr. Rosenwald’s commercial and philanthropic enterprises, and when Mr. Rosenwald gave his 5 million dollar contribution for Jewish agricultural colonisation in Russia, Mr. Hoover wrote to him: This is, indeed, a princely benefaction, and I believe I know something of the great heart and the willing hand with which it is given.
