Justice Shimon Agranat, 58, the American-born jurist, was nominated today to be president of the Israel Supreme Court. He will succeed Justice Yitzhak Olshan, who reached the compulsory retirement age of 70.
Justice Agranat, who was born in Louisville, Kentucky, settled in Palestine 35 years ago at the age of 24, following his graduation from the University of Chicago. He has been a member of the Supreme Court since 1949 and in 1960 he was named permanent Deputy President of the Court. He is a visiting Professor of Criminal Law at the Hebrew University.
