Justice Irving Lehman of the State Supreme Court has been named by both Democratic and Republican parties for the place in the Court of Appeals succeeding Associate Judge John W. Hogan.
The nomination of Justice Lehman to the State Appelate bench, which is the highest in the state was first made by the Democrats. Opposition arose at first in view of the fact that one Jewish Justice, Judge B.N. Cardoza, is already a member of that court.
The press generally commends the nomination of Judge Lehman, speaking in high terms of his exceptional qualifications.
The New York Times referring to the nomination says “His fitness for that eminent post by temperament and character, by learning, intellect and experience is known to the bar and the public. He went on the bench at 33 and is now but 47. So the State has every prospect of enjoying the benefit of his faithful service for his full term.”
Judge Lehman is very active in Jewish affaire. He is the chairman of the Jewish Welfare Board and is also one of the directors of the Jewish Theological Seminary.
