Over 400 communal leaders of New York, including representatives of 80 community centers in New York, Long Island and Westchester, met in all-day conference yesterday at the Commodore Hotel to hear reports of the activities of the Greater New York Army and Navy Committee of the Jewish Welfare Board and to discuss the role of the Jewish centers and Y’s in meeting the dislocations caused by the war. The occasion was a joint annual meeting of the JGB’s Greater New York Metropolitan Section, and of its Greater New York Army and Navy Committee.
A special message to the gathering was brought by Brigadier General Ralph K. Robertson, Commanding General of the Metropolitan Military District, who spoke of the JWB as the organization of Americans of Jewish faith, constituting one of the six groups comprising the USO, Gen. Robertson spoke of the American heroes of all faiths and told of "a Meyer Levin who received a medal of honor and added that he had presented the Purple Heart, posthumously to Louis Schleifer’s parents on behalf of the Secretary of War, recently. Frank L. Well, JWB President and the Vice-President of the USO, spoke of the responsibility of the civilian in the war effort.
