The Jewish War Veterans of the United States has asked the Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps for a “full explanation” of allegations that a Jewish Marine recruit was subjected to brutal treatment by non-commissioned officers at the Parris Island, S.C. Marine training base because he is Jewish.

The allegations were brought to light last week by Rep. Mario Biaggi, a New York Democrat, who said the young man has been confined to a mental institution since his discharge from the Marine Corps last July as a result of anti-Semitic persecution. The recruit’s name was withheld at his mother’s request.

JWF national commander Bernard B. Direnfeld asked Gen. Leonard Chapman specifically for an explanation of reports that the young Marine was subjected to physical violence and harassment by drill instructors who allegedly painted a Star of David on his forehead and called him “Jew boy” and “bagel.” Mr. Direnfeld said, in a letter to Gen. Chapman, “It is bad enough to know of recent reports on racism at Parris Island involving black and white personnel. But to hear that Marine non-commissioned officers are singling out individuals for abuse on the basis of religion raises wider questions concerning Marine Corps training.” The JWV commander said “the public deserves an explanation.”
